Users’
Guide to ICS Questionnaires
To facilitate more productive communications among us all
The only restrictions to users are (1) that such use not involve more than
20 mailings for other projects, whether or not for financial profit, and
(2) that communications facilitated by the Survey be carried on with
ordinary civility and appropriate ‘Netiquette. Anyone reported to the organizers
as abusing this service will be immediately blocked from entry. Appeals to
remove blocking will be granted at the sole discretion of the Survey.
The number of questionnaires (hereafter “q-as”) completed from Summer 2001
to Autumn 2004 was about 244. As further q-as come in, they will be added
periodically, but all information is dated, though only post-2004 entries
will have entry dates attached.
Q-as are alphabetically arranged by the first letters of the name as it
appears on the first line of each q-a. The usual searching tools will
produce the usual results. Thus, entering any part of a name will locate
all q-as using that sequence of letters; thus, an initial search for
‘kumar’ produced 16 objects. Searches in the “text” box, i.e., for
individual words or phrases, will generally produce multiple objects; e.g.,
a ‘poetics’ search found 25 objects; ‘social critic’ (including ‘critics’ and
‘criticism,’ etc.) produced 3 objects, but ‘social’ alone (including
socialism, -ist, -ize, but not ‘socio--) produced 215. The word-form could
have been used, however, multiple times in the same q-a in responses to
various questions, about areas of interest, publications, concerns and
proposals for the future, etc.
Downloading, printing or copying and pasting (parts of) q-as are blocked in
order to avoid possible abuses. Thus, searches that ultimately become very
narrowly focussed will most easily facilitate direct communications with
one or a few potentially interested critics identified by a narrow search
process. However, a process for requesting specified downloadable/printable
results of wider searches will probably be established in the future, necessarily
on a fee-for-service basis to cover secretarial time. (A similar service
for authors’ bibliographies, etc., is provided, for example, at the Study
Centre for Indian Literature in English and in Translation (SCILET),
reachable at www.scilet.org.)
Remember that, though the Indian Critics Survey is carried on through
English, we aim to include ALL critics in India active in ALL Indian languages.
If you have published a book or 4 or 5 articles, reviews, etc., in the last
dozen years, please enter this list by responding fully to the questionnaire.
Please also pass this information along to other critics who should be on
the list, or give their names and addreses to one of the above listed organizers.
